DOW reactive diluents are clear, colorless to yellow/amber, low-viscosity liquids with a mild odor. Some are marketed under the tradename POLYPOX™ glycidyl ethers. 95
DOW™ reactive diluents are blended with epoxy resins to improve cure. They are used in applications such as adhesives, civil engineering projects, structural composites, marine and protective coatings, and potting and encapsulation of electronic components 95
Those working with DOW reactive diluents in manufacturing operations could be exposed during maintenance, sampling, testing, or other procedures. Although reactive diluents are used in epoxy resins that are subsequently used to produce consumer goods, the level of unreacted material remaining in the final product would be negligible. 95
Eye contact may cause slight to severe irritation with the possibility of chemical burns or moderate to severe corneal injury. Skin contact may cause slight to moderate irritation with local redness. Repeated or prolonged skin contact may cause burns. For some products, prolonged or repeated skin contact may result in absorption of potentially harmful amounts or allergic skin reactions. In animal testing, exposure to aerosols of some products (GNS SG-8010 reactive diluent and POLYPOX™ R6 glycidyl ether) has been reported to affect the adrenal gland, central nervous system, kidney, liver, ovaries, spleen, testes, thymus, and respiratory tract, while exposure to others (GNS SG-8005 reactive diluent and POLYPOX R14 glycidyl ether) has caused cancer in some animal testing. 95
Most DOW reactive diluents have a low to moderate potential for bioconcentration (tendency to accumulate in the food chain) and a high to very high potential for mobility in soil. These products are only slightly soluble in water and do not evaporate quickly. If released to the water, they would tend to either sink to the bottom or float to the top depending on the density, where they would be expected to biodegrade slowly. Small amounts that escape to the atmosphere will photodegrade. They would not be expected to persist in the environment. Most products should be considered slightly to moderately toxic to aquatic organisms on an acute basis. POLYPOX R18 glycidyl ether is considered harmful to the environment. 95
DOW™ reactive diluents are stable under recommended storage conditions, but can decompose at elevated temperatures. Contact with oxidizing materials, acids, and bases should be avoided, as well as unintentional contact with amines. 95
